Chapter Five Resources

George Washington worked with Congress to set up the new government and add the Bill of Rights. Alexander Hamilton developed plans to fix financial problems. A revolt against a tax on whiskey was swiftly put down by Washington, showing that protest had to be peaceful. Washington took steps to settle conflicts with Britain, Spain, and Native Americans and left office urging Americans to avoid European affairs. Disagreements on many issues led to the development of political parties. John Adams, the next president, avoided a war with France, but Congress passed tough laws that many Americans thought took away people's rights.
