Chapter 8 Resources
In the North, business people invested in new industries, which led to the development of factories and encouraged the growth of cities. The nation built new transportation systems, which helped settlers move west, improved the movement of goods, and linked the eastern and western parts of the country together. As northern cities grew, so did the number of immigrants. Some people reacted to these changes by calling for reforms to solve social problems. One of those reforms movements aimed to bring women more equality.
